Tips on How to Keep Halloween Safe at Your Home

Halloween is that time of year where just about anything can happen. When this is considered, it is very important to consider those factors which may directly affect you, your home and your liabilities in the case someone was to get hurt on your property. Here are some tips to help increase the level of safety at your Halloween home this Halloween night.

For many people, it would be common sense, even on Halloween night, to be sure that areas are lighted well and all hazards are announced such as a step down onto the property. When there are steps up to the front door, be sure the trick or treaters are aware of these as they may not be paying so much attention to such things as stairs or even objects in their path that are meant to be Halloween decorations. Maybe be creative with this if you don’t just want to have a light and sign that says “watch your step”, why not make it a little bit…scarier! Halloween is a great time to have a lot of fun making normally boring things creative.

In regards to lighting, be sure to keep all fire lights away from Halloween costumes and people if you choose to use actual fire for Halloween lighting. Using flames is common during Halloween night in jack-o-lanterns and such. It is important to keep these types of items away from any potential Halloween costume contact and away from any curious trick-or-treaters who may be a little more interested in the Halloween décor than they should be. There are items such as fire-appearance lights you can place inside a jack-o-lantern which can imitate an actual fire. It is a very inexpensive alternative to using actual fire to light the pumpkin in the yard. If you are using actual flames for bigger things, maybe reconsider where they will be placed and even if you think it’s worth using at all.

One of the more common types of injuries on homeowners’ properties on Halloween night is Halloween decoration related. It’s not just the frightening displays causing one to faint or worse, but it is the loose cables, nails and sharp objects left from the installation of the Halloween décor. Most people are aware that the intent is positive when it comes to decorating for the holidays, but sometimes a little extra caution can make a world of difference as many kids are not necessarily considering these factors when trick or treating on your property on Halloween night. Wires and cords (along with items dragging from their Halloween costumes) are in many cases the main reason children trip and fall on Halloween night. Be sure to look out for the kids when considering your Halloween night trick-or-treater paradise.

The next big thing that occurs commonly on Halloween night is the pets getting loose. Be sure that your pets are confined to a secure area as the Halloween costumes ‘encroaching’ on their land may cause them to become quite aggressive. Many animals do not know the difference between a common child and a child in a Halloween costume. So be sure you look out for the little ones this Halloween and keep all pets leashed and away from the trick or treaters in their Halloween gear. Keep these tips and more in mind to help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween night.
