Halloween Fun in Bristol 2010

One hears time and time again about Halloween “why do we have to follow all these American traditions such as Halloween, well, it is really a Celtic tradition dating back thousands of years to the ancient Britons. It is the festival of “Samhain” the summer’s end and the transition from light to dark as the evenings draw in. The Ancient Britons believed that the divide between the real world and the spirit world became thin at this time allowing spirits to pass through. Families invited their ancestors to visit while also warding off harmful spirits, so, if you have a favourite Auntie or Uncle give them a call on Halloween or “All–Hallows–even”!

This period of Halloween for the ancient Britons was also a time to take stock of food and slaughter livestock for the winter. Bonfires were lit and all other lights in the home extinguished, the hearth, the cooking fire, was relit from the bonfire. This amazingly means we have two British traditions involving the lighting of fires at this time of the year although Guy Fawkes came along later. Another tradition which evolved at this time was the hollowing out and carving of turnips which were lit with a candle and placed in windows in order to ward off evil spirits. The Americans copied this tradition using pumpkins.

“Trick or Treating” origins date back to the middle ages when the poor used to go from door to door begging for food in exchange for saying prayers for departed souls on “all souls day” (2nd November). The actual phrase “Trick or Treat” seems to have originated in Canada in 1927 and only then taken up by the US and much later by the UK.
